Men's Fall Outfits for 2022

How to Dress for a Job Interview

You all may know the saying, “Dress for success”. Well quite frankly, I am a firm believer of that. Being uncomfortable with what you are wearing during an interview for the job of your lifetime should be the last of your worries. Hopefully after reading this post, you will have a better understanding of what you should wear so that you can focus on the more important matter at hand, the actual interview itself.

Know your environment

You should first pause and think about where this interview is going to take place. This may sound like basic information, but you would be surprised as to how many people forget this. Knowing the environment of your future workplace is critical to choosing your appropriate outfit. Would you wear a suit to an interview at an ice cream shop? However, with that being said, remember that it’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed. This is why knowing your environment is important. If the workplace has a casual business attire dress code, a sport coat or blazer with some chinos should suffice.

Dress like the person you are

Please do not go out of your way to dress like someone that you are not. For example, if you rarely dress in bright colored suits, but want to wear one to your interview in order to stand out, please refrain from doing so. This is not you, and you will more than likely be uncomfortable with your decision. However, I strongly encourage you to avoid wearing bright colored suits to any interview.

I would choose a grey or navy suit. Make sure that the suit is tailored. The last thing you want to do is look like a boy that just bought his first suit. Remember you are making your first impression on a potential employer; you rarely get a second chance. As for the shirt, I suggest you choose a solid color. Remember, you can never go wrong with a white shirt. If you want to make the best first impression, make it a made to measure shirt.

Accessories

You may ask: should I refrain from wearing any accessories? It really all depends on what you are comfortable with. Pocket squares are okay to wear. I have heard some people say to avoid wearing one, but it’s ultimately up to you. If your potential employer is looking for someone who pays attention to detail, the pocket square may just be an indicator that you are the right candidate for the job. For formal interviews, I highly recommend that you wear a tie. Solid color or subtle patterns are fine. Do not wear an outrageous tie.
